The "American dream", for some, is just that -- a dream especially for those whose employment prospects are diminished by a variety of difficulties. Often referred to as the "non-traditional workforce," these job seekers face barriers such as a past criminal record, physical and intellectual disabilities, language and cultural barriers, and educational deficiencies. On Wednesday, August 1, the CMC forum, "Bootstrap Job Force: Pathways from Poverty" will examine the growing options for the "hard to employ." The panel discussion, featuring Margie Pizzuti, president and CEO of Goodwill Columbus, Inna Kinney, founder and chairman of ECDI, Bo Chilton, executive director, IMPACT Community Action and Roger Blackwell, author and lecturer, will be moderated by Jo Ingles from the Statehouse News Bureau. Even in the best of economic times, such barriers make attaining gainful employment particularly difficult. Non-profit organizations and government agencies offer hope and help to this challenged population. Goodwill Columbus is known for their programs for clients with disabilities but they can also assist anyone looking for employment at the Battelle Career Education Center. IMPACT Community Action assists families who are at or below 200% of the federal poverty guideline with critical programs and services in the areas of Home Energy Assistance, Home Weatherization, Workforce Development and Family Services. These efforts work toward empowering low-income individuals and families to become self-sufficient. ECDI, Economic and Community Development Institute, is a non-profit economic development organization. ECDI offers training in financial literacy, innovative microenterprise development and capitalization programs, and business incubation services. Their willingness to take a financial risk on an inexperienced entrepreneur has set them apart from traditional bank loan officers and their success rate has been commendable. Moving out of poverty seems impossible, yet while some doors are slamming, others are opening to offer help thanks to new and expanding initiatives.
